Daniela Gabriele Grimm

The lab at AU was started in August 2008 and our key interest covers two research areas: (i) Translational Medicine (Tissue Engineering of artificial vessels and cartilage) and (II) Space Medicine - the impact of microgravity on human cells.

We test the growth behavior of 3D aggregates deriving from different cell types, for example thyroid carcinoma cells, chondrocytes and endothelial cells in weightlessness. 3D growth can be achieved by culturing cells on a Random Positioning Machine (RPM, Dutch Space, NL) or a Rotating Wall Vessel (Synthecon, USA). The investigation of spheroids might help to avoid animal tests in the field of pharmacology and medicine. They also can be used in cancer research.

Furthermore, we investigate the Proteome of thyroid cancer cells and endothelial cells cultured under simulated microgravity and normal 1g conditions. Proteome analysis is performed in order to identify protein candidates changing under microgravity conditions.

The group participates in the training of bachelor, MSc and PhD students.

Research Funding: European Space Agency and German ‘Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft (BMWi)’
