Molecular cognition
The biological basis of cognitive processes such as learning, memory, attention, and emotions is only poorly understood and remains a great scientific challenge. The focus of our research is to dissect key molecular interactions that govern cognition and to understand how the dynamics of these operate in regulating behavior in animal models. Currently, we are interested in molecular networks of the transmembrane type I receptor family, sortilins (Vps10p domain receptors) and their influence on neuronal function and animal behavior. In addition, we aim to decipher how polymorphisms in the genes encoding sortilins affect specific behavioral traits in subgroups of psychiatric patients. The laboratory participates in the training of bachelor, MSc and PhD students.

Research interests

  • Modulation of neurotrophic factor activity by sortilins and its implications in neuronal circuitries.
  • Mice transgenic for sortilins as animal models of psychiatric disease.
  • The role of polymorphisms in genes encoding sortilins in the development of psychiatric disease.


  • Behavioral analysis – experimental paradigms for spatial memory, operant learning and fear conditioning. Experimental models for the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia. Analysis of addictive behavior. Motor coordination and motor learning.
  • Laser scanning confocal microscopy and high content screening microscopy – subcellular localization of proteins, colocalization, morphological analysis, protein sorting assays.
  • Cellular neurobiology – generation of primary neurons. Assays for neurite outgrowth and spine density. Signaling events in neuronal subtypes.
  • Cell biology – proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Cellular signaling cascades. Protein processing and sorting assays.
  • Protein analysis – recombinant protein expression, purification, and characterization. Site-directed mutagenesis. Protein-protein interaction analysis. ELISA. Western blotting.
