Anders Lade Nielsen Lab


An important biomedical question is how the human organism with its billions of cells with a variety of different functions is generated from the single fertilized cell. This information is captured within the DNA genome which is the same in nearly all cells. However, the reading of the genome is different in individual cells. The mechanism which allows such a different reading is abbreviated epigenetics, meaning the layer above the normal genetic information. Epigenetic control mechanisms are essential for the development and maintenance of complex organisms. Examples for epigenetics are regulation of transcription at the chromatin template as well as miRNA mediated regulation. Deregulation of epigenetic mechanisms is consequently involved in a variety of human disorders. The main focus of the laboratory is to question how epigenetics is involved in normal developmental processes and in human cancer and neurological disorders.
