RESEARCH
The laboratory started in 2001 and has three main focus  areas: (i) Understanding the principles of interneuronal communications and network behavior, ii) understanding the pathophysiological aspects of  the initiation and spread of epileptiform seizure activity (ictogenesis), iii) development of new therapeutic strategies for the treatment of epiletic seizures. The studies are based on in vitro model systems in which electrical activity is recorded from either individual or from populations of neurons. We have developed an in vitro model for epileptic seizure activity which gives us the unique opportunity not only to study ictogenesis, but also to explore new strategies for the treatment of seizure activity.

RESEARCH INTERESTS
Interneuronal communication: Investigation of the principles for transfer and integration of signals from one neuron to another.

Dendritic signal integration: Investigation of dendritic electrophysiological and integrative properties.

Neuronal network behavior: Investigation of the principles for synchronization of neuronal network with the focus on oscillatory behavior.

Neuronal network dysfunction: Investigation of the pathophysiological aspects of ictogenesis.

Astrocytic dysfunction: Investigation of the impact of astrocytic dysfunction in relationship to ictogenesis.

Antiepileptic strategies: Investigation of new strategies for the treatment of epilepsy. 

METHODOLOGIES
Standard methods in the laboratory include electrophysiological recording techniques, electrical field stimulation, histochemical analysis and in vitro animal models.
