Exploring how viral infections are controlled by the immune system is vital to understand why some infections cause severe diseases while others do not lead to an overt change in health status; likewise, why some viruses persist within a host, while others are effectively cleared. As such, immune responses to viral infections are an area of research underpinning human health and disease, especially in the context of growing concerns about a lack of efficient antiviral treatments, emerging viruses, and long-term health issues associated with chronic infections, e.g. development of dementia. Understanding host-pathogen immune pathways requires in-depth knowledge in the fields of both immunology, virology, and adjacent fields, such as neuroscience.
This two-day symposium brings together scientists in immunology, virology and other fields to present and discuss cutting-edge research in this broadening field of research. A key goal of the meeting is to promote communication between world-class scientists and the young generation of researchers, ranging from molecular immunologists to clinical scientists, and thus to facilitate the translation of new basic discoveries.
