About the PI

Background

Robert A. Fenton received his PhD in Physiology from the University of Manchester, UK and undertook the majority of his postdoctoral training at the Laboratory of Kidney and Electrolyte Metabolism, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, USA. For the last 17 years he has conducted research at Aarhus University, Denmark, where he is currently Professor of Cell Biology and leader of a research group. He also leads the Kidney, Cardiovascular, and Metabolic Diseases (KCM) research theme at the Dept. of Biomedicine, which hosts more than 25 groups who collaborate with clinicians and the pharmaceutical sector.

Research Focus

The research focuses on the molecular regulation of renal membrane proteins important for electrolyte balance, blood pressure control and water balance.

Notable Achievements

Prof. Fenton is recognized internationally as a major contributor to the core knowledge base of renal epithelial cell physiology and nephrology and has published over 180 peer-reviewed manuscripts and 14 book chapters. His landmark studies in the field of urea transporters, aquaporin water channels and renal cotransporters are recognized by numerous national and international awards, including the New and Young investigator awards from the Renal Section of the American Physiological Society and major awards from the Nordic research community, including the Anders Jahre Prize for Young Researchers, the Lundbeck Foundation Young Researcher Prize and the Elite Research Prize from the Danish Ministry for Higher Education and Science.

Funding

His research has been continuously funded allowing him to maintain a thriving research environment for junior and senior researchers. Prof. Fenton serves as the Chair of the Renal Section of the American Physiological Society and is an associate editor of the American Journal of Physiology: Renal Physiology.
