Lecturer Marina Romero-Ramos: "Immune response during Parkinson's disease: more than we initially thought"

It has been long known that microglia, the innate immune cell of the brain, change during Parkinson's disease. In addition, evidences collected during the last decades have suggested that this neuro-inflammation might play a deleterious role in the disease progression. However, the immune changes in the disease are not limited to this, and work from our lab and other researchers in the world suggest that the immune response in patients includes changes in both brain and periphery. Moreover, innate and adaptive immune cells partake into this immune response that is associated with neuronal changes and thus with symptoms. This, yet to be characterized, immune response might open possibilities of new therapeutic approaches in the disease. In the talk I will give a short overview of the field while putting in perspective our lab's work.

About the speaker
Marina Romero-Ramos is Associate Professor at the Department of Biomedicine and DANDRITE. Her group is focusing in research on the neurodegenerative process in Parkinson’s disease and other alpha-synucleinopathies. Her fundamental goal is to reveal new biomarkers and targets for disease modification that can be ultimately used to develop novel therapies for the patients.

The talk is 45 minutes followed by 15 minutes of discussion, for a total of 1 hr.
