Elective course for students of molecular medicine and biology

The course is an elective course for students studying for a master's degree in molecular medicine or molecular biology. The course corresponds to what is described in §57 of Executive Order 2028 of 14/12/2020, chapter 14, on qualification requirements for personnel who work with laboratory animals, and is approved by the responsible Danish authority (Fødevarestyrelsen).

The course entitles those who have taken it to carry out animal experiments under another person's animal experimental license, cf. functions A and D as described in EU directive 2010/63/EU Article 23.2:

A: Carrying out procedures

D: Euthanize animals

The course takes place in the first part of the spring semester (typically February-March) and ends with a written exam. The course contains both theory and practice, and the theory covers, among other things:

  • Use of laboratory animals in biomedical research
  • Laboratory animal biology, anatomy and behaviour
  • Danish and European legislation
  • Ethics
  • Working environment and safety
  • Hygiene and health monitoring
  • Anesthesia and pain management
  • 3R

During practical exercises, handling and execution of basic procedures on mice and rats is taught. The exercises usually take place over two days, where it is mandatory to attend both days to pass the course.

The course is handled by the student administration at Nat-Tech, who can be contacted at undervisning.nat-tech@au.dk.
