Before you start

Whether you are new or an experienced user of The Animal Facility, there are a few different things you need to know before you can start.

New users

If you are new researcher or not familiar with The Animal Facility or our services, please contact Jakob Harslund, head of The Animal Facility, at jakob@biomed.au.dk.

Also, we encourage you to book a meeting with one of our veterinarians and possibly a team leader before you start. There will be opportunity to discuss upcoming projects and other necessary things before starting, e.g.:

  • How and where to work with animals
  • What licenses are needed to carry out your experiments
  • Your qualifications and courses
  • Need for procedural or behavioral rooms and special equipment
  • Need for purchases and possibly breeding of experimental animals
  • To book an appointment, write to the veterinarians at vet.biomed@biomed.au.dk

After the initial meeting, a tour of The Animal Facility is required before you can gain access. This is also coordinated with veterinarians or team leaders. In addition, you must fill out a project plan before you can start experiments, this can be found under Project plans.

Finally, we would like to encourage you to read the other tabs under the point 'Before you start' to the left.

Experienced users

If you are an experienced user of The Animal Facility and want to start a new project or study, we recommend that you speak to one of the veterinarians if you have questions about equipment, animals or are in doubt about anything in relation to the new experiment that is about to start. The veterinarians can be contacted at vet.biomed@biomed.au.dk.

If there is no need for a meeting with the veterinarians, you must complete a project plan, which can be found under Project plans.

You can read about how to order animals for experiments in the section Ordering animals.
