Licenses

There are various licenses from the Danish authorities that must be in place before animal experiments can begin. Below is a brief description of the licenses that may be relevant.

Experimental license

In order to carry out animal experiments, an animal experimental license is required. This is given by the Animal Experiments Inspectorate, and when the application has been approved it must be forwarded in PDF format to the veterinarians in The Animal Facility at Department of Biomedicine.

Review of experimental licenses before submission to the Animal Experiments Inspectorate

It is a good idea to get veterinary advice before submitting your experimental license application for the Animal Experiments Inspectorate (Dyreforsøgstilsynet). The veterinarians can provide input on general structure, clarity on specific fields, anesthesia and analgesia, humane endpoints and more. This can in some instances minimize comments and changes requested on the application during processing by the Animal Experimental Council (Rådet for Dyreforsøg).

If you have never written a license application for animal experiments in Denmark before, we recommend you to seek guidance in the presentation 'Den gode ansøgning' available on the Animal Experiments Inspectorate's webpage. Unfortunately this is only available in Danish, but a Danish colleague may be able to help you translate, or you can use an online translation service to get an idea of the most important points.

You can download an experimental license application template (Danish or English) to the right if you do not have access to AIRD where the official applications are made. In the template you get an idea of the application content and the character limitations that apply to the different fields. Please be aware that the lay description (non-technical project summary) must always be in Danish. The technical description of the project can be in Danish or English.

You are welcome to send the filled out template to the veterinarians for review on vet.biomed@biomed.au.dk, please write 'Review of experimental license' in the subject field of the email.

Breeding license

For breeding transgenic animals (genetically modified organisms, GMO), an animal breeding license must be applied for at the Animal Experiments Inspectorate. The Animal Facility has one central breeding license for transgenic animals, which you can apply for using. Please download and fill in the breeding license application form and send it to Karina Vestergaard Nielsen karinavn@biomed.au.dk.

Before you can start breeding of new genetically modified strains, it is necessary to have a meeting with team leader Lone Dahl Thomsen to determine how much space and personnel must be allocated to take care of the breeding. You can find contact information on the page About us.

Permission to work with GMOs

In the case of gene technology research or work with genetically modified organisms (e.g. cells or animals), the work must be reported and registered at the Danish Working Environment Authority (Arbejdstilsynet). You will then be given a journal number, which must be entered in the project plan before initiation of experiments. The work is reported via the Danish Working Environment Authority's website here
