Ordering drugs

The Animal Facility has a stock of the most common veterinary and human drugs used for laboratory animals, primarily mice and rats. These consist, among other things, of drugs for anesthesia, analgesia and euthanasia as well as isotonic glucose and saline, sterile water or other remedies for fluid therapy and dilution of drugs. You can see an overview of the standard range to the right.

If you need specific drugs for experiments that are not part of the standard range, please contact the veterinarians on vet.biomed@biomed.au.dk. Please write 'Drug order' in the subject field of the email and include information such as concentration of the drug, amount, route of administration, special wishes for formulation etc. and include item number if possible.

Drugs and other pharmacy goods are paid for in tick@lab.

Ethiqa XR - extended-release Buprenorphine

We have the possibility to use Ethiqa XR which is an extended-release formulation of buprenorphine for the management of post-operative pain in laboratory rodents. The long-acting opioid has been approved by the Danish Medicines Agency for use in mice and rats, providing sustained analgesia for up to 72 hours following a single subcutaneous administration. By using Ethiqa XR we can reduce both animal handling and procedural stress, thereby enhancing animal welfare and minimizing experimental variability. This approach aligns with best practices and recommendations from the Animal Experiments Inspectorate.

Dose and prince example
Ethiqa XR comes in a concentration of 1.3 mg/ml and the dose for mice is 3.25 mg/kg. For a 25 g mouse, this corresponds to an injectable volume of 0.06 ml. Ethiqa XR cannot be diluted due to the nature of the oil emulsion, but the relatively small injection volumes can be managed with 3-500 microliter insulin syringes. One vial contains 3 ml which will result in approximately 50 doses under the asumption they are used for a 25 g mouse. With a price of approximately 5740 DKK per vial, each dose will cost around 114 DKK and cover the animal for pain for three days. Full therapeutic concentration is reached 30 minutes after subcutaneous injection.

If you are interested in learning more about Ethiqa XR we encourage you to consult with the facility veterinarians for guidance on the appropriate integration of Ethiqa XR into your animal experiments.
