Osmotic pumps allow continuous compound administration, without repeated injection or handling of animals. Osmotic pumps are inserted subcutaneously (anesthesia required) in the scapular region or intraperitoneally, depending on animal and osmotic pump size. Osmotic pumps are preloaded with the wanted compound or solution, with doses according to animal size. The concentration of the solution needs to be calculated from the pump’s fixed dose/delivery rate and total duration of administration, for the desired final dose to be correct. The pump size determines the loading volume and duration of administration.
Osmotic pumps can be implanted subcutaneously in the scapular region or intraperitoneally.

Instech vascular access buttons (VABsTM) allow for repeated injections or sampling. The button is insered subcutaneously and connected to one or more catheters that are inserted into the wanted vessel(s). The button and aluminimum cap ensure a closed system, preventing evaporation, improving patency, and allowing aseptic conditions. The cap is magnetic and stays in place so that animals can be co-housed. The button connects to PinPorts, which have standard luer connectors. Implantation requires anesthesia, but sampling can be done on alert animals afterwards.
