Satellite animal facilities

The Animal Facility is responsible for a number of animal housing areas, 'satellite facilities', outside the main animal facility in the Skou building. These satellite facilities can be used by the researchers at Department of Biomedicine or Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics and serve different functions. Below you can read about the different satellites and what their primary uses are.

251

The housing room 1115-251, colloquially known as '251', is a satellite housing room where we can house mice for short term experiments in Skou laboratories outside the main animal facility, or short term housing of mice with compromized health status before the Cryo Laboratory can perform rederivation or cryopreservation of the mouse strain.

The mice in 251 are housed in single-use cages in Scantainers and cages are changed every Wednesday by the relevant animal caretaker satellite team. This means that there will be limited space for researchers and for performing experiments on Wednesdays in general.

Researchers working with mice in 251 should be aware that a 24-hour quarantine period apply, hence you cannot enter The Animal Facility in Skou the first 24 hours after you have been working with mice in 251 on the second floor of the Skou building.

1874

The satellite facility in 1874-K40 is part of Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Faculty of Natural Sciences, but is maintained and managed by The Laboratory Animal Core Facility at Department of Biomedicine, Faculty of Health.

All mice at 1874 are housed in single-use cages in Scantainers and cages are changed every Wednesday by the relevant animal caretaker satellite team. It is possible to get transgenic mice from the 'The Barrier' (core breeding facility in Skou) out of the main animal facility to perform experiments in building 1874, but it is not possible to bring animals from 1874 and back to The Laboratory Animal Facility in Skou. Researchers working with mice in 1874-K40 should also be aware that a 24-hour quarantine period apply, hence you cannot enter The Animal Facility in Skou the first 24 hours after you have been working with mice in 1874.

If you need mice transported from The Animal Facility in Skou to the  facility in 1874-K40, the animal caretaker team can bring the mice on Wednesdays. The caretakers must be provided information on number of animals, strain, age, sex and indtended use at least one week in advance of the transport. It is also necessary to attach an approved project plan if the animals are to be used in experiments other than euthanasia and tissue donation.

1182

In building 1182, The Animal Facility has a number of satellite housing rooms, primarily for housing mice. The research groups located in building 1182 has advanced imaging equipment and setups for complex behavior experiments.

The mice in 1182 are housed in single-use cages in Scantainers and cages are changed every Wednesday by the relevant animal caretaker satellite team. It is possible to get transgenic mice from the 'The Barrier' (core breeding facility in Skou) out of the main animal facility to perform experiments in building 1182, but it is not possible to bring animals from 1182 and back to The Laboratory Animal Facility in Skou. Researchers working with mice in 1182 should also be aware that a 24-hour quarantine period apply, hence you cannot enter The Animal Facility in Skou the first 24 hours after you have been working with mice in 1182.
