The Transgenic and Cryopreservation Service Unit

The Transgenic and Cryopreservation Service Unit is an integrated part of the Laboratory Animal Core Facility at Aarhus University and is a well-established and functioning laboratory providing various services and transgenic techniques.

The Transgenic and Cryopreservation Service Unit

The generation of genetically modified mice represents a major breakthrough with ramifications in many areas of biomedical research. It opens the possibility for studying the function of genes by gain of function or loss of function genetic modifications in transgene or knockin/knockout mice and thereby creating 'genetically precise' animal models of human diseases

The latter has turned into a powerful tool for the investigation of human diseases and the development of potential therapies, including gene therapy.

The services and methods for generation of genetically altered mice include:

  • Guidance for designing specific mouse lines and constructs
  • Pronucleus injection into zygotes, two-cells and morula
  • Embryonic stem (ES) cell injection into blastocyst stage embryos
  • Electroporation of zygotes (CRISPR/Cas9)
  • Tetraploid embryo aggregation
  • Aggregation chimeras
  • Embryo transfer (ET)
  • Cryopreservation of mouse lines (embryo/sperm)
  • Rederivation of a frozen mouse lines (embryo/sperm)
  • Sanitation of mouse lines
