The Transgenic and Cryopreservation Service Unit

The Transgenic and Cryopreservation Service Unit is part of the Laboratory Animal Core Facility at Department of Biomedicine, Aarhus University.

We provide state‑of‑the‑art expertise in the generation, preservation, and rederivation of genetically modified mouse models for researchers at AU and collaborating institutions.

The Transgenic and Cryopreservation Service Unit

Genetically modified mice have transformed biomedical research. By enabling precise gain‑ or loss‑of‑function modifications, these models allow researchers to explore gene function in vivo and to create highly specific models of human disease. Such models are essential for understanding developmental processes, tissue maintenance and repair, and the molecular mechanisms underlying a wide range of pathological conditions. They also play a central role in the development of new therapeutic strategies, including gene‑based treatments.

Our Services

We offer a comprehensive suite of methods for generating and maintaining genetically altered mouse lines, including:

  • Scientific guidance on designing mouse lines and genetic constructs
  • Pronuclear injection into zygotes, 2‑cell embryos, and morula
  • Embryonic stem (ES) cell injection into blastocysts
  • Electroporation of zygotes (CRISPR/Cas9)
  • Tetraploid embryo aggregation
  • Chimera generation via embryo aggregation
  • Embryo transfer (ET)
  • Cryopreservation of embryos and sperm
  • Rederivation of frozen mouse lines (embryo/sperm)
  • Sanitation of mouse lines

Our laboratory is equipped with advanced micromanipulation systems for embryo injections, dedicated ES cell culture facilities, and specialized mouse strains for embryo production and transplantation. All animals are housed in individually ventilated cages with enriched environments and monitored daily to ensure optimal welfare.

Innovation and Collaboration

New technologies for generating genetically modified mice continue to evolve rapidly. We are committed to offering both established and emerging methods and participating in projects to develop and refine cutting‑edge techniques.

Support From Start to Finish

We work closely with users throughout the entire process—from discussing project strategies and modifying ES cells to injecting embryos and establishing new mouse lines. We also provide long‑term archiving of genetically modified strains through cryopreservation and can rederive lines from frozen stocks when needed.
